Starting School in September 2024

Welcome to St John's

We are delighted to welcome you to St John's School and look forward to meeting you all. Miss Rees, our Early Years Leader and Reception Class teacher has written a letter to all parents and carers highlighting key dates and transition arrangements for your child(ren).

Dear Parents/Carers,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for choosing St John’s Primary School for your child’s education and to welcome you to our school community.  Over the coming months you will be provided will a lot of information about your child starting school.

Welcome Meeting –Thursday 13th June

We will be holding an evening meeting just for Parents/Carers on Thursday 13th June at 5.30pm here at the school.  At this meeting we will talk about what to expect when your child starts school and we will hopefully reassure you and answer any general questions.  You will also be informed whether your child will be in Group A or Group B at this meeting so you will know which sessions your child/ren will attend during the transition period.  This is an informative meeting aimed specifically for parents, so we ask where possible that your children do not attend, however if you do not have any childcare we would not like you to miss the information.

Stay and Play Session – Tuesday 18th June

We will be holding a stay and play session for your child/ren to have a chance to get to know their peers, myself and their classroom further.  The class will be split into two groups, Group A will attend 10am-11.30 am and Group B 1pm-2.30pm. We would encourage you to drop your child off and return for them at their pick up time.

Storytime Afternoon Thursday 27th June 2.30-3pm

Children will have a further opportunity to get to know their peers, myself and the classroom during this storytime session.  All children are welcome to attend, we would encourage you to drop off and return for them at pick up time.

Afternoon Tea Wednesday 17th July

We will be holding an afternoon tea for you and your child/ren on 17th July at 2.30pm -3pm. We will be inviting the current Year 5’s who will be their Year 6 buddies from September. This will also give you an opportunity to meet other parents in your child’s cohort.

Parent Workshop – Thursday 19th September

We will hold a workshop on Thursday 19th September to share with parents/carers information on what we will be teaching and how it will be taught. It is important that at least one parent or carer for each child attends this session, so that you are able to support your child’s learning at home.  Please note this workshop is for parents/carers only.

Birth Certificates

We have a legal obligation to see your child’s birth certificate for our records. They will not be allowed to start school until the school has seen the birth certificate. Please email us at enquiries@stjohnsprimaryschool.org.uk with a scan of your child’s birth certificate, as this will need to be checked by the office.  Please can all emails sent have your child’s name and Starting School 2024 in the subject line.

Forms to return and related information

If your child has been offered and you have accepted from B&NES a place at St John's CE Primary School for September 2024, please fill out our Enrolment Form.

Local Walks and Image Consent

Please read and complete the Local Walks and Image Consent Form.

Free school meals

It is important to note that although EYFS and KS1 children receive school meals without charge, an application should you be eligible would be beneficial, since the additional funding can help the school to provide for your child in many other ways.  Please read the Free School Meals eligibility form carefully to see if you qualify for this.

Further details about free school meals are available from the BANES website:www.bathnes.gov.uk/services/schools-colleges-and-learning/schoolmeals-and-catering/free-school-meals

If you have any difficulties accessing any of the information above, please call or email the school office on 0117 9863824 or enquiries@stjohnsprimaryschool.org.uk with your child’s name and Starting School 2024 in the subject line and our team will be happy to help.

We recognise that it can be both an exciting and perhaps anxious time for children (and parents) when starting school for the first time.  If there is anything that we can do to help or to ease any concerns, please do contact either myself via telephone or by email to the main school office.  Mrs Clark is our Office Administrator and she will be able to answer many of your questions or you may wish to email enquiries@stjohnsprimaryschool.org.uk.
